Alliance for Product Quality in Africa
ETHIOPIAQUALITY CHAMPIONS PROGRAMME

REQUEST FOR EXPRESSION OF INTEREST
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Are you passionate about quality? Want to make a difference? Want to be part of a national team of quality champions to support the business community on a long term basis? If so, this is for you and we encourage you to apply.

In the context of the German government funded “Alliance for Product Quality with Africa” project, the International Trade Centre will offer support to improve the quality of products and operations in the coffee, textile and spice processing sectors in order to comply with EU quality requirements. As part of this support, a pool of Quality Champions will be developed and qualified to serve Ethiopian business as part-time trainers, coaches and advisers through national institutions.

Since 2018, ITC is developing and qualifying experts in quality management in cooperation with the World Alliance for Quality (WAQ), consisting of the following leading institutions in the field of quality:
  • International Academy for Quality (IAQ)
  • American Society for Quality (ASQ)
  • Japanese Union of Scientists and Engineers (JUSE)
  • European Organization for Quality (EOQ)

These experts are called QUALITY CHAMPIONS or QCs for short. They are given an international qualification (Basic and Advanced Quality Professional Certificate) by the above bodies and commit to serving the countries on a long-term basis.

The key elements of the Quality Champions programme are described below:

1.       A team of up to 20 Quality Champions will be selected from the private and public sectors through an open application process. Factors such as relevant subject as well as sector experience will be considered in addition to long-term commitment.

2.       The QC qualification programme will last approximately 12-15 months and will include 5 short technical workshops with assignments in between as well as the implementation of a quality improvement project in a processing company or similar.

3.       QCs will be trained on using tools and techniques for ensuring quality and food safety in a business and for building international requirements into operations. They are guided and overseen by international experts.

4.       The quality improvement projects implemented by the QCs as part of their qualification will focus specifically on complying with EU quality and food safety requirements and include a series of coaching sessions and in between guidance and support. Once qualified, they will be able to implement such projects without external support.

5.       The QCs will be part of and connected to an international network of Champions developed by ITC and WAQ.
